A Champion for and a Champion of the City of Champions
La’Trena Barrett has deep roots in the city of Duncanville with just over 34 years as a resident and almost 12 years as a resident of District 3. She attended Alexander Elementary, Hardin Intermediate, Reed Jr. High School, the Duncanville Ninth Grade School and graduated with honors from Duncanville High School in 1998. After graduation she matriculated at Southern Methodist University then transferred to the University of North Texas. With only 30 hours left to earn her bachelor’s degree she enlisted in the United States Army. La’Trena completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. She graduated from the U.S. Army Signal School at Fort Gordon in Georgia. Ultimately, while stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, La’Trena deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2006-2007) with the 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. She was one of seven women soldiers deployed with the Charlie Company 3BSTB. La’Trena’s highest rank achieved after one tour of military service was Sergeant (Non-Commissioned Officer). After the military La’Trena returned home to Duncanville where she earned a Real Estate Certificate from Dallas Colleges Cedar Valley Campus. She returned to the University of North Texas where she earned both a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Marketing (2009) and Master’s of Business Administration in Marketing and Basic Corporate Training Certificate (2011). She subsequently earned a second masters degree in Finance from Texas A&M University – Commerce (2017).
La’Trena is a patriot, servant leader, and woman of faith. This is demonstrated in her dedication to serving others. After completing her service in the military La’Trena continued her career within the private sector. Notable experience includes working for Atmos Energy headquarters in Dallas, and Wells Fargo Capital Finance (Wholesale Banking). Additionally, La’Trena has worked at various levels of government including the Dallas County Hospital District (Parkland Health and Hospital System), the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. La’Trena is committed to serving all citizens of the community. Her broad business and educational background will be an asset to the Duncanville City Council. La’Trena Barrett is a shining example of what it means to be the “City of Champions”!
